Experience the magic of musical Tesla Coils at Southwestern Electric Power Co.’s Sunday Funday on July 28 at Discovery Place Interactive Museum in Texarkana.
The museum’s 1 million-volt dual Tesla Coils create a musical masterpiece of sight and sound that attracts visitors from across the region. Admission to the show and other museum exhibits is free from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. July 28 as part of SWEPCO’s exhibit sponsorship.
Nikola Tesla invented the Tesla Coil – an air-core transformer for high frequency alternating or oscillating electrical currents – in 1891. The invention, among other things, allowed for the wireless transmission of electricity.
Today, at Discovery Place, two synchronized Tesla Coils produce a musical, lightning-like dance of tunes such as “Dueling Banjos.”
“The Tesla Machine continues to be one of the most educational, exciting and sought after exhibits at Discovery Place,” said Velvet Hall Cool, board president of Texarkana Museums.
In 2012, SWEPCO supported the installation of the permanent exhibit, said Jennifer Harland, External Affairs manager for SWEPCO’s Texarkana District.
“We’re continuing that support by contributing to exhibit upgrades,” she said.
Harland said the museum plans to update exhibit lighting, its sound system and add 28 new songs ranging from David Bowie classics to Disney hits to the show’s repertoire.
