Recently, SWEPCO employees delivered over 50 purses to the Shreveport-Bossier Salvation Army Corps for their annual purse auction, Purses for a Purpose. Happening this Saturday, August 25, 2018, the event raises funds for the Corps programs, which serve those in need of after-school care, veteran’s assistance and groceries for families. Event attendees are treated to a delicious lunch and have the opportunity to purchase or bid on purses, ranging from unique oddities to designer Louis Vuitton handbags.
The event celebrates the power of the purse, representing the ability we all have in our purses to make a donation to change lives. Each purse at the auction may range in prices as low as $5, $10 or $20.
“Each one of the different prices represents a different gift to our community. The $25 tag represents a family having food for a week. Each bag that gets sold at each one of the 320 table seats: that’s 320 families with a week’s worth of groceries. That’s incredible. The $40 one is pretty special. That’s care for our veterans: care for a night, making sure he or she gets to the doctor and receives counseling. It represents so much more than a handbag. It’s tied to something bigger for our community,” said Major Whitney Morgan, Corps Officer.
In addition, SWEPCO made is a $2,500 sponsor of the event, augmenting the money raised during the auction.
