For only the second time in recent memory, a husband and wife team are co-chairs for the United Way of Greater Texarkana annual campaign, with the appropriate theme of “The Power of One!” Jennifer and Craig Harland, both SWEPCO employees, hosted some 80 city leaders at a barbeque lunch September 14 to kick off the campaign.

“Our SWEPCO culture in support of the United Way is a strong one,” said Jennifer Harland, external affairs manager, in addressing the lunch crowd.

The local United Way, with a 32-person board of directors, has 30 programs in 20 agencies reaching out to cities in nine counties. “Last year, we reached 20,000 children and family members,” added Jennifer.

Jennifer and Craig were part of the United Way campaign video that featured a handful of student actors. “The video was certainly a fun project,” said Craig Harland, manager, distribution system, Texarkana. “I have friends working the campaign, and many more who will be my friends as the campaign continues,” said Craig. “Just as one lineman calls in a team to get the lights back on, one person helping others to raise dollars in the United Way drive will multiply the giving.”

Former SWEPCO employee and Texarkana, Texas Mayor Bob Bruggeman thanked the company for its commitment to community involvement. “I was an employee for 18 years and able to chair the United Way campaign back in 1996. SWEPCO is a community leader in allowing its employees to serve in local volunteer roles.”
