LSU Health Shreveport earns $11,680 from SWEPCO’s LA Commercial & Industrial Solutions Program
Louisiana State University Health Shreveport (LSUHS) received a check representing the incentives earned in AEP Southwestern Electric Power Company’s (SWEPCO) Louisiana Commercial & Industrial Solutions Program. The energy-saving measures will significantly reduce the amount of electricity used.
The medical school building installed energy-efficient lighting upgrades far above the mandated state energy code. The upgrades will save more than 78,367 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, which is equivalent to preventing the annual greenhouse gas emissions from more than 128,662 miles driven by an average passenger vehicle, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency. The estimated annual energy savings is $6,000.
LSUHS replaced nine floors of fluorescent lens fixtures in common spaces and hallways with LED direct/indirect retrofit door kits, which provide a more even illumination. The kits enabled the health sciences center to use existing fixture housings while upgrading the aesthetic look, and avoided entering the drop-ceiling space, which reduced installation costs and minimized infection control risks.
“The improvement of our interior hallway lighting had been an objective for us for a while. The insight that SWEPCO provided for us through their solutions program was invaluable to us as we mapped out the project,” said Justin Roy, project manager of facility planning for LSUHS. “Not only did the change result in a brighter and safer environment for our doctors, students and staff, but it also allows us to reduce our overall energy consumption. The incentives provided through the program made this a more economically viable project that fit within our budget.”
“We’re proud of the accomplishments of LSUHS, and we’re pleased to reward its efforts,” said Jeff Thigpen, SWEPCO’s Louisiana consumer program coordinator.
The Commercial & Industrial Solutions Program helps SWEPCO business customers save energy and money by providing facility improvement recommendations and financial incentives based on the verified electric energy and demand savings. The completed upgrades will provide big energy savings for the health sciences center, while creating a more inviting environment for workers and the public.
